Private Label Spice Sourcing From India: A Guide
How retailers and brands build a private-label spice line from India — spec, MOQ, packaging and compliance — without owning a factory.
Decide your product and grade first
Private label works when the product definition is precise. Fix the botanical species, form, grade and any origin claim before you cost the pack. If you are launching turmeric, choose the curcumin band by origin — Alleppey-type finger 4–6%, Erode 2.5–3%. If chilli, decide whether the shopper is buying heat (Sannam S4) or colour (Byadgi). The grade decision drives everything downstream.
Know the private-label MOQ
Private-label runs start smaller than commodity bulk. Trade practice is roughly 100 kg per variant for a private-label trial, moving to about 300 kg for a standard blend and 500 kg for a custom blend. That lets a brand validate a pack and a market before committing to container volumes.
- Private-label trial — about 100 kg per variant.
- Standard blend — about 300 kg.
- Custom blend — about 500 kg.
Packaging and label compliance
Your label carries legal weight in the destination market. Net weight, ingredient and allergen declarations, country of origin, and any nutrition panel must match destination rules. If you sell “cinnamon,” be precise: cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) is high in coumarin and true Ceylon cinnamon (C. zeylanicum) is very low — India schedules them as separate spices, and selling cassia as cinnamon into the EU invites a coumarin problem.
Build compliance into the recipe
A private-label owner is responsible for the finished product’s safety. That means designing to destination limits from the outset: aflatoxin B1 5 µg/kg and total aflatoxins 10 µg/kg in the EU, Salmonella absent in 25 g, and steam sterilisation rather than ethylene oxide, which the EU banned in 1991 and screens at a 0.1 mg/kg default limit.
How YouPals helps — we coordinate, we do not manufacture
YouPals does not own a blending or packing line and never claims to. For private label we act as your sourcing desk: we translate your brand spec into a build, place it with vetted CRES-registered suppliers and third-party co-packers, coordinate sampling and testing to your destination limits, and run pre-shipment QC on the finished retail pack. The brand, the recipe and the contract stay yours; we manage the supply chain and the accountability behind it.
