Contract Manufacturing of Spices in India
How to run a blend, grind or pack programme through Indian processors — and how a sourcing desk coordinates it without owning a line.
What contract manufacturing covers
Contract manufacturing in spices spans grinding, blending, sterilisation and packing to a buyer’s recipe and spec. It lets a brand own a formulation without owning a plant. The buyer supplies the recipe and standard; the processor executes it. Volumes follow the MOQ ladder — roughly 300 kg for a standard blend and 500 kg for a custom blend.
Choosing and qualifying the processor
The processor must be a CRES-registered, FSSAI-licensed operation with the right capability — validated steam sterilisation (not ethylene oxide, banned in the EU since 1991), controlled grinding to protect volatile oil and colour, and traceability from raw material to finished pack. Qualify them the same way you would a supplier: licences, specification discipline, testing and references.
Protect the recipe and the spec
Put the formulation, grade parameters and destination contaminant limits into the contract, and reference an approved sample. For blends, define each input’s grade — the curcumin band of the turmeric, the ASTA of the chilli — because the blend is only as good as its components. Include a confidentiality clause to protect a proprietary recipe.
Build in testing and pre-shipment QC
Test at input and output: raw-material adulterant screens (Sudan dye, lead chromate), post-sterilisation Salmonella (absent in 25 g), and the finished-blend contaminant panel. Given the EU’s elevated checks on cumin and pepper, verify covered parameters before the container ships.
How YouPals helps — coordination, not ownership
YouPals owns no factory, grinding line or blending facility, and never claims to manufacture. For a contract-manufacturing programme we act as your sourcing desk: we qualify and coordinate vetted CRES-registered processors and co-packers, protect your recipe in the contract, coordinate steam sterilisation and testing, and run pre-shipment QC against your approved sample. You own the brand, the recipe and the contract; we manage the processors and the quality chain.
Frequently asked
Does YouPals own the factory that makes my blend?
No. YouPals is a sourcing desk with no owned processing. We qualify and coordinate vetted CRES-registered processors and co-packers, protect your recipe in the contract, and run QC — the manufacturing is done by the vetted processor.
What is the minimum for a custom spice blend?
Trade practice is around 500 kg for a custom blend and 300 kg for a standard blend, though this varies by processor and formulation.
