MG1 vs TGEB Black Pepper: The Difference

Malabar Garbled and Tellicherry Garbled Extra Bold are graded on bulk density; TGEB is the bolder, premium grade.

What is the difference between MG1 and TGEB black pepper?

Both are cleaned (garbled) black pepper graded by bulk density. MG1 (Malabar Garbled) runs about 500-550 g/l; TGEB (Tellicherry Garbled Extra Bold) is 550+ g/l, made of the largest, heaviest berries, and sells at a premium.

MG1 and TGEB compared

Indian black pepper grades by bulk density (Spices Board).
GradeFull nameBulk density
MG1Malabar Garbled 1~500-550 g/l
TGEBTellicherry Garbled Extra Bold550+ g/l

Why bulk density is the grade

Bulk density is a proxy for berry size and maturity. Bolder, heavier berries pack more densely, so TGEB's higher g/l reflects larger, more mature corns and a fuller appearance. "Garbled" in both names means the pepper has been cleaned and sorted to remove light berries, stalks and dust.

Choose on end use: TGEB suits whole-pepper retail and premium grinding where berry size shows; MG1 is a sound workhorse grade for general processing and blends.

Frequently asked

Is TGEB always worth the premium over MG1?

For whole-pepper retail where berry size is visible, yes. If the pepper is ground into a blend, the extra bulk density may not justify the price step.

What this page does not tell you

Piperine by grade
Bulk density grades berry size, not pungency. A verified piperine percentage by grade is not stated here; test if piperine is the buying criterion.
