Reading the grade
Purity here means the proportion of clean cumin seed after removing foreign matter such as stalk, stones and off-seeds, typically lifted by machine and optical cleaning. Europe quality's extra half point of purity reflects tighter foreign-matter tolerance, which is why EU buyers ask for it.
Purity is a cleanliness grade, not a safety clearance. It says nothing about pesticide residue, on which Indian cumin faces a 30% EU border check, or pyrrolizidine alkaloids at a 400 µg/kg limit. Specify purity and the safety tests separately.
Frequently asked
Is Europe quality cumin cleaner than Singapore quality?
Yes, marginally. Europe quality is specified at 99.5% purity against Singapore quality's 99%, meaning tighter foreign-matter tolerance. Both still need separate pesticide and pyrrolizidine testing for the EU.
