What Is a CRES Certificate for Spice Exporters?

CRES explained: the Spices Board registration every legitimate exporter of India’s scheduled spices must hold.

What is a CRES certificate and why does it matter?

CRES is the Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices, issued by India’s Spices Board. It is mandatory to export the 52 scheduled spices, costs ₹5,000, is valid three years, and requires IEC, PAN, GST, FSSAI and a bank certificate.

What CRES is

CRES stands for Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices. It is issued by the Spices Board of India and is the baseline legal credential for exporting any of the 52 spices scheduled under the Spices Board Act.

The registration fee is ₹5,000 and the certificate is valid for three years. To obtain it, the applicant must already hold an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC), PAN, GST registration, an FSSAI licence and a bank certificate.

Why it matters to an importer

For a buyer, CRES is the fastest way to separate a genuine exporter from a middleman. If your counterparty cannot show a CRES in its own name, it is not the registered exporter of record and someone else is standing behind the shipment.

CRES is a gate, not a quality mark. It confirms the entity may export scheduled spices; it does not certify that a given lot meets aflatoxin, ETO or adulteration limits. Pair it with lab testing.

  • Mandatory for the 52 scheduled spices.
  • Fee ₹5,000; validity 3 years.
  • Prerequisites: IEC, PAN, GST, FSSAI, bank certificate.

Frequently asked

Does CRES guarantee spice quality?

No. CRES certifies the exporter is registered and eligible, not that a specific consignment passes contaminant or purity limits. Quality is proven by third-party lab reports.

How long is CRES valid?

Three years from issue. Ask for the certificate date and confirm it has not lapsed before contracting.

What this page does not tell you

CRES suspension or blacklist status
We do not claim visibility into whether a specific CRES has been suspended or an exporter blacklisted; that requires direct confirmation with the Board.
