USA vs China: India's Largest Spice Market?
Both are correct depending on year and metric: USA leads FY2025-26 value share, China leads FY2024-25 absolute value.
Two figures, both correct
There is no single "largest market" answer for Indian spices without pinning the year and the metric. Two authoritative datasets point in opposite directions because they measure different years and different things.
| Metric | USA | China | Source | Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Share of India's spice export value | 14% | 12% | Spices Board | FY2025-26 |
| Absolute import value (US$ million) | 654.71 | 768.50 | IBEF | FY2024-25 |
Why they disagree
- Different year: the Spices Board figure is provisional FY2025-26; the IBEF absolute is FY2024-25.
- Different metric: 14% vs 12% is a share of total value; 654.71 vs 768.50 is an absolute dollar total.
- Both are right for what they measure. Quoting one as "the answer" without the year and metric is where trade claims go wrong.
How to cite it safely
If you need the current-year picture, use the FY2025-26 value share (USA ahead). If you need the last fully-reported absolute total, use the FY2024-25 IBEF value (China ahead). Never combine the two into a single ranking.
Frequently asked
Is the USA or China the biggest buyer of Indian spices?
It depends. By FY2025-26 value share the USA leads (14% vs 12%). By FY2024-25 absolute import value, IBEF puts China ahead (US$768.50M vs US$654.71M). Different year and metric, both correct.
Why do sources disagree on the largest market?
The Spices Board reports a value share for FY2025-26; IBEF reports an absolute dollar total for FY2024-25. They measure different years and different quantities.

- Same-year, same-metric ranking
- No single public release gives both USA and China on the same metric for the same year, so we cannot state a reconciled head-to-head; each figure is reported as published.
- FY2025-26 absolute per country
- Absolute USD by destination for FY2025-26 is not published; only the value share is available.
