Border check-rate table
Reg. (EU) 2019/1793 raises the frequency of official checks on specific origin-and-product combinations judged higher risk. For Indian spices, two entries drive most of the paperwork and most of the holds.
| Product (India origin) | Hazard | Border check rate | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cumin (seeds) | Pesticide residues | 30% | Raised January 2025 |
| Black pepper | Salmonella | 50% | In force |
What the rate means for a shipment
- A 30% check rate means roughly three in ten Indian cumin consignments are pulled for physical and laboratory checks at the border, each a delay and a cost.
- A 50% check rate on black pepper for Salmonella means one in two lots is examined; a Salmonella-absent-in-25g result and treatment record should travel with the goods.
- The list is amended periodically. A product not on it today can be added, and rates can rise, as cumin did in January 2025.
Reduce your exposure
The controls are frequency-based, so a clean pre-shipment dossier is what turns a border check from a rejection into a wave-through. Match the shipment to a pesticide panel for cumin or a Salmonella result for pepper, and keep the certificate of analysis lot-specific.
